Massage Cream Recipe for Calming

This calming massage cream recipe is a staple in my house; I’ve been meaning to post it for awhile.  Between V’s struggle with tight muscles and high tone, and my concerns for skin breakdown and pressure sores, I massage her with it several times a day. There are tins of this all over my house – It’s my go-to essential oil massage cream recipe. Super easy to make, this basic massage cream recipe is a great foundation for any essential oil blend using ingredients I typically already have on hand.  The containers are reusable, making it even more cost effective.

My massage cream recipe makes (8) 2-ounce containers (these tins come in a 12 pack from Amazon, of course!). I usually make half of the recipe with the muscle calming essential oils blend, the other half various different blends, like one for congestion. You can use the oils that I have listed, or add your own blend to the massage cream base.

Important Note:

Essential oils are amazing and powerful. It’s important to underscore the power of essential oils here, because I want to make sure your kiddo is safe, especially if they have seizures like V does. If it’s your first time using essential oils, I recommend doing a little research to find out more about any contraindications. To find out more about the properties of different essential oils I love the Essential Oils Pocket Reference book. You know your child best. If they have skin sensitivities or are hypersensitive in any way, start with a smaller amount of essential oils.  You can always add more later by putting the tin on the counter near the stove top and allowing it to slightly melt, then adding more essential oils as desired.

Customize this massage cream recipe to achieve the texture you like by simply changing the amount of beeswax.  Add more beeswax for a massage cream that’s firmer (think hair wax) and or less for one that’s softer, kind of more like the consistency of Vicks, I guess. Either way, the massage cream melts and absorbs into the skin nicely so there’s no greasy residue, and it’s not at all drippy or messy like a massage oil. Use whatever organic olive oil you have in the pantry, the main difference will be in the resulting color of your massage cream. The lighter olive oil results in a lighter color. Add a few drops of vitamin e oil for a more skin healing support if you’d like, or leave it out if you don’t have any, it won’t change the foundation of how this essential oil massage cream base works.

What a Difference Some Beeswax Makes. (alt caption: “Mind your own beeswax”)

Using 4 tbl of beeswax and regular olive oil.

This massage cream is easy to make. Start by deciding on which oils you want to use and laying out the tins. Then put the coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax in a pan and melt while stirring over a low heat. When completely melted, fill each tin almost to the top. Next, add the oils to each tin, giving a quick stir with a toothpick. Let them set until firm, label them, and voila! Massage cream for weeks. Friends share, so be sure to give a tin of your custom massage cream to someone you love.

To each tin, add:

  • 12-16 drops essential oil – Right now I’m using 7 drops lavender, 4 frankincense and 4 Roman chamomile.
  • 3 to 4 drops vitamin e (optional)

Give each tin a quick stir with a toothpick then let them set until firm.

  • I may have used too much beeswax, leaving a waxing consistency on my body. Do you recommend re-melting and adding more coconut oil to help with this?

    Thanks~

    • Thanks for sharing, I haven’t had that experience. I’ve never tried adding more coconut oil, but I have remelted it for different reasons, and it sets up fine afterwards. It seems like it would work to add a little more coconut oil and olive oil in equal proportions? Let me know how it turns out!
